Are you interested in learning Spanish?  More and more English speakers are seeing the benefit in being able to speak Spanish.  It is the third most spoken language in the world, so whether your interest in Spanish comes from a fascination with the culture, a desire to advance your career, or an infatuation with a beautiful muchacha that you met at the salsa club, learning Spanish can benefit you greatly.  It is easy to begin studying with gusto and get discouraged after just a few lessons or a couple attempts at practicing.  Many well-intentioned people purchase audio courses that they never finish and come away having learned very little.  If you are serious about studying and learning Spanish, it is important to set your expectations.  Learning a new language is not easy.  Some people really struggle and others pick things up more quickly, but everyone has to devote a good amount of time and effort to be able to learn a second language.  You will have to be constant and persistent in order to really be able to achieve your goal of learning Spanish.

If you are ready to put in the work to study Spanish, here are a few ideas to get you started.  For beginners, books and online lessons or audio courses are a great option.  These will help you to get a basic understanding of useful vocabulary, grammar, syntax and pronunciation of Spanish words.  Audio courses are great for people who have a long commute to work and would like to do something productive on their drive.  It is also beneficial to study with an audio course because learning to hear and understand Spanish is a very important skill to your overall development.  You need to develop your ear for Spanish and this will help your pronunciation to improve as well as your level of comprehension.  A beginner course will give you a great foundation to build on.

Another option for starting your Spanish studies is to take a class at a local community college.  If you can find a class that fits into your schedule, this could be a great way for you to learn.  Few people have the discipline to study a book or online course all by themselves, but if they take a class they suddenly have some accountability and remain more devoted to their studies.  It will benefit you to interact with a real live instructor who speaks Spanish.  You will also have the opportunity to meet other students who share your common interest in learning to speak Spanish.  You may find a new friend or travel companion to share in Spanish speaking adventures.  A class will get you started learning some of the important basics that you can build upon later.

Learning Spanish is all about practice and repetition.  If your class only meets once or twice a week you are not getting nearly enough practice to make much progress.  For this reason it can work very well to combine your a community college class with an audio course or reading a Spanish book.  There are plenty of Spanish movies, television programs and music available that will all contribute to your progress.  Even if you don’t understand the lyrics to Spanish songs, just listening to it will help develop your ear for Spanish and as you become more familiar with the language you will start to understand more.  Watching TV or movies with English subtitles will also help you to pick up more and more Spanish.  Use as many different avenues as you can to contribute to your Spanish learning efforts.
